Doing fieldwork in North Korea
Événement City-NKOR : Korean Studies Roundtable
Valérie Gelézeau (EHESS), Élisabeth Chabanol (EFEO) and Koen De Ceuster (Leiden University) in conversation with Christopher Green (Leiden University/International Crisis Group)
28 November 2018

Valérie Gelézeau (EHESS), Élisabeth Chabanol (EFEO) and Koen De Ceuster (Leiden University) have longstanding and ongoing individual research projects in North Korea, in the field of urban studies, art and art history, archaeology and heritage. They are also collaborating in a joint research project City, Architecture and Urbanism in North Korea, funded by the French National Research Agency ANR (CITY-NKOR, ANR-17-CE27-0012). From the start, fieldwork has been a core component of their research engagement with North Korea. In this roundtable, they addressed the relevance and restrictions, the opportunities, challenges and difficulties they encountered in doing fieldwork research in the tightly controlled and supervised environment that North Korea is.
